Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a disease that affects teeth and surrounding structures, including the periodontal ligament (connects the tooth to the socket), gum tissue, and bone.

Signs of periodontal problems:

  • Inflammation or infection of the surrounding gum tissue
  • Gum recession
  • Bone loss

Periodontal problems may affect your overall health and will eventually lead to tooth loss. They may increase your risk for complications from heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and stroke.

Your hygienist is the best candidate to identify early onset of periodontal disease. Regular cleaning appointments with your hygienist are a crucial part of your overall oral health care. Any signs of compromise in your periodontal health are detected early and discussed with the dentist, along with potential treatments.
At Deerfoot Meadows Dental, we will discuss your periodontal health status in detail, and will provide treatment recommendations if required. Most of the treatments are performed within our office. These include: periodontal surgery, gingival (gum) grafting, and bone surgery or grafting.
